Advanced Regional Europe

An optional level III Certification Course.

This course covers both the ancient world and medieval world of wine. This course is a complement to the Advanced Regional France and Advanced Regional Italy Courses.

It presents the rest of Europe to the same level of detail as found in our other Advanced Regional wine courses. If you would like to take a detailed, technical course on European wine (other than France or Italy) you can take this course without being a Level III student.

However, we strongly recommend that you first take the Guild Certification Seminar before attempting a Level III course. You may be enrolled in our Level II Certification program and concurrently take Level III courses.

This course covers the following countries:

• Switzerland
• Austria
• Germany
• Hungary, Bulgaria and Eastern Europe
• Greece
• Portugal
• Spain

You will also learn about

• Geography and terroir
• Wine production techniques by style and region
• Wine growing and obligation requirements for each Appellation in the regions studied
• How to use vintage data, by region

You will receive more than 500 pages of material, specifically designed for this course and taste about 60 to 70 wines.

This course is available in two formats:

• As a Quarter long course, meeting once a week for ten weeks
• As a 1-week intensive study course, meeting daily

This course is usually available in the Winter (beginning in January) and Summer (beginning in July) Quarters and is available in both the Quarter long and intensive study formats when it is offered. Check the schedule for specific dates, times and locations. The Quarter long course meets from 6:00PM to 10:00PM once a week for 10 weeks for a total of 40 contact hours. Course fees are $1900. Cost of the course includes registration fees, handouts, wine, and instruction. We taste older vintage wines in this course. The 1-week intensive study course meets from 9:00AM to 5:00PM daily, Monday through Friday, for a total of 40 contact hours. Course fees are $1975. Cost of the course includes registration fees, handouts, wine, lunch each day and instruction. We taste older vintage wines in this course. There is no difference in course content and instruction between the 10-week and 1-week courses.
