A Level IV Certification Course

Wine was considered one of the critical economic and cultural influences during the Medieval Period and Early Renaissance – roughly, from 500 AD to 1500. It was a major influence on the development of European culture. This is a required course for the Level IV Certification.

If you would like to take a detailed, technical course on the Medieval World of Wine you can take this course without being a Level IV student. However, we strongly recommend that you first take the Guild Certification Seminar before attempting any Level III or Level IV course.

You may be enrolled in our Level II Certification or Level III Certification programs and concurrently take Level IV courses.

This course covers the following cultures in the Medieval Period:

• The Byzantine Empire – The Eastern Roman Empire
• Medieval France – To 1200 AD
• Holy Roman Empire and the Duchy of Alsace
• England and the English Intervention In France
• The Iberian Peninsula – Spain and Portugal
• Medieval France – 1200 to 1500
• Italy and the Early Renaissance
• Medieval Central Europe and Eurasia
• The Collapse of the Byzantine Empire – The Ottoman Empire

You will also learn about:

• Everyday life in Medieval Europe
• Medieval food and wine
• Religion and wine in Medieval Europe
• The Importance of monastic orders to wine – “the wine monks”
• The Impact of the crusades on wine In Europe
• The impact of wine on the world economy during the Middle Ages
• You will receive more than 400 pages of material, specifically designed for this course and taste about 40 wines
• You will receive the Guild History of the Medieval World time line chart

This course includes a period wine dinner on the last day of class.

This course is available in two formats:

• As a 12-week course, meeting once a week
• As a 1-week intensive study course, meeting daily

There is no difference in course content and instruction between the 12-week and 1-week courses. The 12-week course meets from 6:00PM to 10:00PM once a week for a total of 44 contact hours. Course tuition and fees are $1800. Cost of the course includes registration fees, handouts, wine, period wine dinner and instruction.

The 1-week intensive study course meets from 8:00AM to 5:30PM daily, Monday through Friday, for a total of 44 contact hours. Course tuition and fees are $1875. Cost of the course includes registration fees, handouts, wine, lunch each day, period wine dinner and instruction.

There is no difference in course content and instruction between the 12-week and 1-week courses.
